Residential Treatment Facilities
Residential treatment facilities may be a great alternative to military schools for girls who have serious behavior problems or psychological issues. Read about residential treatment facilities for troubled teens and see a list of facilities in the US.
Residential treatment centers are programs that combine clinical treatment with behavioral and academic support, primarily for adolescents with serious behavior disorders and psychological issues. Residential treatment facilities that are members of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs usually have both a treatment and an academic accreditation, and meet the high ethical principles that NATSAP holds, so their search is a good place to start when looking for an appropriate treatment facility. Residential treatment facilities for girls may offer a combination of individual, group, and family counseling. Some smaller facilities, designed to serve fewer than 30 clients at once, are described as small residential programs, and may adopt a family-style setting. Residential treatment facilities may focus on particular issues, or favor a particular philosophy or approach in their treatment style. Some combine residential treatment with an outdoor therapeutic program or another treatment style, such as wilderness living or transitional living. Explorations, Florence Crittenton Center for Pregnant & Parenting Teens, Life-Line, Inc., and Turnabout/Stillwater Academy all provide a small residential program for girls. The majority of residential treatment facilities for girls that are members of NATSAP have two features in common. First, of the 60 treatment facilities listed, 27 are in Utah. Second, 24 of the facilities only treat teenagers (children aged 13 - 18). However, treatment locations range from Florida to California, and include one facility in Canada, and girls as young as 4 and up to “all ages” are treated at a minimum of one of the centers.
